New Book Idea

ok, so I’m making another alternate-universe story.

I hope it will be a series of books, one for each major war in Earth’s history, starting with WW1.

the title of the series will be “Mage Force”. the first book will be “Elves in the Trenches”

Kel Jire is the main character, he’s an Elf in America and he has curly blond hair and bright green eyes.

the concept of the story is this: humans, elves, centaurs, merfolk, vampires, etc, all live in relative peace here on Earth. the magic folk all generally stay out of human matters, but the US government decides to set up a secret military division, the Mage Force. this division is made up of mostly Elves and a few Half-Elves, because they have the most diverse magical abilities. (an Elf’s magic is like his thumbprint)

there are 13 units with 13 soldiers each. 2 mages of each basic Element (fire, water, earth, wind, ice, plant, and lightning) and 1 psychic. The more powerful the mage, the more likely they are to get in. Kel receives a letter about it and decides to join. He’s a Wind Mage, and he is assigned to unit K.

From the time they enter this top-secret program, each soldier is labeled so they can be kept track of between wars and pulled back into service when necessary. since Elves live forever and never get old, they can’t retire from the Mage Force. every soldier knew this before joining. They all get their soldier label tatooed on the back of their neck. Kel becomes K-05. his fellow soldiers jokingly call him “chaos” and he repeatedly proves it when he summons up vast tornadoes to take down enemy planes.

I need to do some more research in order to actually be able to write these war-stories. anyone have any suggestions of books I should read to get a good feel for the style of the genre? (is war fiction a genre? hm… I think it should be.)
